I went to Frankenmuth with my family yesterday. Frankenmuth is a German village in Michigan that was built in 1845. Frankenmuth is located northeast of Lansing and took about an hour to reach by car.
When it comes to the history of this village, German church people came here to spread Catholicism. They came with a religious purpose, not just for immigration. At first, agriculture was the main industry in this area, after 1960, it was decorated like a small Bavaria town in Germany. Since then, the village has changed into a tourist destination. Germans wanted to preserve their tradition such as religion, culture, and living style, so they followed German traditions in schools, churches, and social rules. They followed strict Lutheran lifestyle, and they used German language for a long time.
When I traveled there, I felt like it was a small village in Germany. The signboards of the buildings were all in German, with English added. The buildings were in German style, and the food was all traditional German cuisine. I tried to eat German style food, so I ordered Frankenmuth Bavaria-style chicken for our lunch. It was delicious because it tasted like Korean ginseng chicken soup. Of course, I drank German beer - Hofbrau Munchen’s larger and black beer.
Although that was a short trip, I had fun. And I could feel the German vibe. -Alex
